Paint what thy wilt shall be the whole of the law....
Okay, I accept that, but it's artist like Marie White who actually follow this philosophy and create extraordinary, magnificent decks like the Mary-El Tarot.
I am extremely green and jealous with envy of anyone who has a copy of the sold out limited edition...but, there's hope...
Marie was kind enough to share her future plans to have the minors finished in 2008 and published shortly thereafter. She promises she will definitely make sure it becomes available as a complete deck one way or another.
Marie also shared her thoughts on her inspiration for the deck...
...My very first inspiration was that I felt the need to make a deck that was very balanced between masculine and feminine energies and also with regards to art and readability. Balance and symmetry in all things has been a concept I have tried to stick with all along. I haven't tried to follow the example of any particular deck but rather try to learn from them all and try to catch glimpses of the archetypes that underlie them all as well as religion and mythology and just cosmic pattern and then illustrate that to the best of my ability. You could say I am very inspired by nature, wildlife, humanity and the patterns found in the same.
Also, be sure to check out this part of the Mary-El site where Marie shares the process of creating the Queen of Swords...it a intimate look into how she developed the card, and I found it to be really truly amazing and intriguing.
It seems Marie is not the only artist in the family. Her darling daughter is the creator of the Sophie's Tarot. It's looks like Sophie is going to be following in her mothers footsteps.
Congratulations Marie, and best of luck with your deck from The Tarot Channel!!!

Mind blowing images! I wouldn't know where to begin with reading them. And I LOVE Sophie's Tarot. Very cool.

We have been SO fortunate at our local Raleigh-Durham Tarot Meetup, because Marie and Sophie are two of our members. Marie has been graciously presenting her Majors to us, one card per month. She has generously shared both her artistic process and discussed her deep scholarship and research for creating this deck.
The glorious results speak for themselves.
Marie - you are a treasure!
