Tarot Reading Couture: What Are You Wearing?
What do you wear when you read Tarot for others?
This review of a Tarot reading in Iowa has all the sophistication you'd expect from a student-written article in the Northern Iowan. But while reading it I couldn't help but obsess on the description of the Tarot reader's outfit: sweat pants and a scarf. I'm all about practicality and comfort. But come on ... Sweat pants and a scarf?!?
Last week, I had the opportunity to drop in on a psychic fair in a large southeastern city. There were three Tarot readers there:
- a barefoot guy in white pajamas
- an older man wearing a stained and faded t-shirt, blue jeans, and flip-flops
- a woman trying to win a Lily Munster look-a-like contest.
You can't always judge a book by its cover (though many people did when my first book came out -- ha!), but frankly, I wouldn't be inclined to put my fate in the hands of someone who can't pull on a clean t-shirt before reporting for reading duty.
Because I don't look so great in a diaphanous housecoat and eye glitter, I tend to wear a black suit and tie (when reading at psychic fairs or corporate events). When working with established clients, I usually default to black "business casual" attire (usually a polo shirt and slacks).
So: how about it? When you're reading for the public ... what do you wear?

I usually wear something smart/casual. Slacks and a sweater or a neutral dress. Personally I feel that reading for the public should be treated professionally. I get tired of seeing 'scruffs' after all people are paying for a service and deserve to get a good service.

I'm an aging hippie. I've always designed my own clothing and love creating body coverings (much to my kid's dismay, sometimes).
I'll wear my royal purple full length velvet cape to run errands. I think I may fall into the "weird" catagory but, I'm just being myself.

I wear pretty much the same stuff I wear for therapy clients . . . usually slacks with a jacket, though I tend toward relaxed cotton and solid colors. I want to look approachable, but also as someone who respects THEM by looking good. I live in a relaxed, semi-rural area, which makes a HUGE difference in the "dress code."
